Black & White Painting Class: Understanding Light, Shadow, and Depth

CHF 90.00

Duration: 2.5 hours
Included:
- Painting materials
- Tools and equipment
Language: English

How is light created in an image, and how can it be made to glow?
How can depth and contrast be expressed on a flat surface?
In this painting class, you’ll learn how to work with light and shadow to build stronger, more expressive images. We’ll explore how contrast creates focus, how tonal transitions add depth, and how the relationship between dark and light shapes the overall composition. Through guided exercises, you’ll practice observing and translating tonal values, understanding how highlights, midtones, and shadows interact, and using them intentionally to strengthen your work.

Participants can choose to work either with pencil or with a single color to create a monochromatic painting, focusing on tone, contrast, and visual balance rather than color.

This session is suitable for beginners and anyone who wants to develop a more confident, structured approach to creating depth and atmosphere in their paintings.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll have one piece, which you can carefully bring home.

Participants: Maximum 6 participants.
We believe in the power of small groups to learn and enjoy your class.
Course runs with a minimum of 2 participants.
